We are delighted to have been recognised for our in-house training and development programmes with a Highly Commended award in the Sentinel Business Awards.

Our commitment to training and development gives us the resources to continually outperform the market and grow our business based on its smart way of working and dedication to innovation.

CEO Theo Kortland explains: “There is a shortage of skilled technicians across the refurbishment industry so we have created a bespoke training and development programme to deliver both career opportunities and business growth in our local communities. Our continual investment in training and development, from apprenticeships and trainee programmes to refresher courses for skilled technicians helps safeguard our position as an employer of choice. Being recognised for this strategy in the Sentinel Business Awards, the local paper for our Cold Meece technical centre, demonstrates that we’re definitely on the right track.”

We aim to curate the complete training package so that our technicians become multi-skilled across the workshops, not just in one skill. The development of a bespoke maintenance technical accreditation to continue to widen our skills base is part of our focus on training to ensure we are meeting the demands of new technology specifically electric vehicle training.  This enables us to best help the major fleet operators, rental companies and vehicle manufacturers we partner with to unlock the value of every end of lease vehicle being de-fleeted.

Through our training programme, we have built and retained an increasing number of skilled and multi-skilled employees specific to our business requirement and objectives whilst developing long-term careers with opportunities for promotion and progression.

Moving up in their careers, there are many paths a trainee refurbishment technician can take once they become a multi-skilled technician. For example they can move into team leader, on site mentor and supervisor positions if interested in using their skills to provide leadership, guidance and support to the refurb team.

As an example of the training and development programme for a trainee, our in house training course for trainee refurb technicians covers six areas and is completed on a timescale dependent on each candidate.  The six areas are: preparation for primer, primer application, preparation for topcoat, refinish application, polish and basic panel repair.

Once the trainee refurb tech training is complete, there are also many other options across the workshop for technicians to take if an interest is shown, such as in panel repair.  We offer a bespoke miracle pull training and welding qualifications to British standards. For paint they can go on a zero to painter course which caters for someone with no real experience in the paint shop; where external providers PPG paint and SPIES-Hecker help to train the candidates. Another example is smart repair which is a huge part of our business, this area is multi-skilled from texture repairs, fabric repair, basic retrimming of headlining’s and boot boards, leather repairs and paintwork rectification.

Our employees from skilled technicians, trainees and apprentices tell us that we are different from other refurbishment companies because we:

  • Offer excellent career progression opportunities and long-term job security along with competitive rates of pay and achievable team bonuses.
  • Continually invest in our state-of-the-art technical centres which means our technicians use the latest equipment and utilise the most advanced and innovative tools, techniques and technologies.
  • Offer industry-leading working conditions and adhere to the highest standards of health and safety across all our operations.
  • Continually invest in training at all career stages including in-house refresher courses as part of the Smart Fleet Solutions Academy and training on the latest techniques in partnership with the likes of Martec Training and the Morelli Group.
  • Offer ongoing mentoring and the opportunity to mentor others to help develop the next generation of best-in-the-business technicians.
