DEBRA is the only national charity supporting people suffering from Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a potentially fatal skin condition that causes constant pain due to unstoppable internal and external blistering
Wearing Christmas jumpers and eating cake at our four technical centres and at head office today has raised a total of £2,000 for our 2019 charity of the year, DEBRA*. We’ve matched this
amount bringing the grand total to an amazing £4,000.
Jenny Jackson, Business Development Manager for DEBRA, says: “We are thrilled that Smart Fleet Solutions has kicked off our 2019 partnership with such a fun event raising funds to help us provide research into effective treatments and a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, as well as support and equipment for those suffering from this potentially fatal condition, which causes lifelong disability and pain. With the funds raised by Smart Fleet Solutions, £137 could provide specialist Babygro’s for an infant, £168 could pay for one hour of vital research, £250 could provide an EB carer with essential equipment, £360 could provide an air condition unit for an EB sufferer’s bedroom, £600 could provide adaptations in their home for a wheelchair user and £2,500 could provide healthcare, membership and community support help for four people suffering from EB for a year for example. We are looking forward to working with the charity champions at each of the Smart Fleet Solutions’ centres to create a calendar of fund raising activities throughout 2019.”
Theo Kortland, Managing Director at Smart Fleet Solutions, adds; “I hadn’t heard of DEBRA before attending an event where an EB sufferer gave a heart wrenching account of life with this condition. I mentioned this on my return to head office and then one of my members of staff told me that they knew a family with a child with EB. I decided there and then to make DEBRA our charity of the year and am delighted that our first event has raised so much in just one day: we are aiming for a total of £10,000 to be raised over the course of next year to fund the building of a holiday home for the charity.”

What is EB?
- Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a potentially fatal skin condition that causes constant pain due to unstoppable internal and external blistering. There are at least 5,000 people living with EB in the UK and half a million worldwide
- EB is currently incurable. In its most severe forms, EB is fatal. Even in its mildest forms EB causes lifelong disability and pain. Extreme disfigurement is often visible but internal tissue damage can be hidden
- Excessive blistering creates scar tissue that can cause fingers and toes to fuse together, and can lead to an aggressive form of skin cancer
- People suffering from EB are often fighting infections, both internally and externally. Blisters have to be drained and dressed every day – a painful procedure that can take several hours
